While I find smoking unattractive in reality, it's interesting how strongly the message that it's glamorous and alluring resonates. I guess we've all seen a little too much of that kind of ad.
The Jane Fonda Effect is worth reading (Freakonomics, nuclear energy,“The China Syndrome”, etc.).

Getting back on topic (not always easy for me ;))...
Despite the insidious nature of the industry, I was impressed with the quality of some of the artwork used in cigaratte advertisements in the early and mid 20th century. It would appear tabacco companies have a long history of spending a significant portion of their budget on advertising.
I love cigarettes, but I do not smoke.

I do think smoking looks rather glamorous in old movies and some of these ads, but I can't stand cigarette smoke. However, I probably fell for the vintage glamour when I was a teenager, because I wasn't always a non-smoker.
