Cthulhu Elephant?

Actually it is an indian street painting of Indra's multi-trunked elephant.

Also, Wagga sent me this depressing article that states there are only 3500 tigers left worldwide.
Note: "The Chinese government is actively planning to legalise the trade (of tiger products) and if they legalise this trade then the demand for wild tigers is going to increase manyfold," he said, pointing out that people preferred products from wild tigers over farmed animals.

@buzz saw,
That *is* depressing and this article it links to is even worse.
When cats kill so many rodents what is logic in sending them to death camps to clean up the city?

Are Women Too Sexy for I.T.?

Not only is it inhumane, it's ineffective. The US Navy tried it in my neck of the woods, and ended up switching to trap/neuter/vaccinate/release because it gave them a smaller feral cat population than trying to exterminate them. A healthy cat that's not spending energy on reproduction can control a large territory.

@Notanoptimist,
I wonder why lack of women in IT is so much more of a problem in Europe than here...

OT: Predictions made in 1900 about life in 2000

Dare to dream, eh?

@NotAnOptimist
Some of it isn't too far off. Overall I don't think it's any less accurate than these predictions 50 years later. My particular favorite:
- So tell your children not to be surprised if the year 2000 finds 35 or even a 20-hour work week fixed by law.

Federal officials have indicated that they are likely to close the Pacific salmon fishery from northern Oregon to the Mexican border because of the collapse of crucial stocks in California’s major watershed.

That would be the most extensive closing on the West Coast since the federal government started regulating fisheries.

...The 2007 count of the fall Chinook jacks from the Sacramento River was less than 6 percent of the long-term average, Mr. Lohn said.

At least there's some small bit of good news today.
