Exxon still doesn't want to pay for Valdez oil spill

The spill soiled 1,200 miles of shoreline and killed hundreds of thousands of birds and other marine animals, inflicting environmental injuries that have not fully recovered, according to numerous scientific studies. Exxon contends it should not be liable for the actions of the Exxon Valdez skipper, Joseph Hazelwood, when the supertanker ran aground on March 24, 1989, with 53 millions gallons of oil in its hold.

THE TRUE TOTAL COST IS $1,776,000,000.

Bastards.

Exxon can easily afford to pay the damages, says David Oesting, an Anchorage, Alaska, lawyer representing the Alaskan residents, in his brief. The $2.5 billion verdict represents three weeks of Exxon's current net profits, he says.

19 year's interest on the original $5B would bring it up to 12-15B. now.

That's a quarter's profit. Pretty fair.

I just can't believe such a wealthy corporation is making such a fuss over $2.5 million.

"If Exxon gets away with it, it's time for civil war," says Mark King, 53, a cup of coffee clasped in his hand.

The men in the room nod.

"Is Cordova dying?" someone asks.

"Are the herring dead?" a voice answers. "Hell, yes."

"This town isn't dead yet," says James Aguiar, 47, the biggest, hairiest, burliest man in the place. The room falls silent. "It's moving sideways. It's part of the living dead."

XOM uber-sux. I can't say enough bad things about them.

Obama just mentioned ExxonMobil's profits again in the latest debate - his bold anti-Exxon stance impresses me, but also makes me fear for his personal safety.

Has Billary ever mentioned Exxon or anything other than "35 years of experience"?

If Obama gets the dem. nod he needs to pick a strong vp with scruples, one that the maggots fear worse than him, he should also have a clearly defined #3 person lined up. If he tries to clean up the corruption he will be in grave danger for sure.

@BuzzSaw,
Who would that be?
As a "junior senator" from nowhere (politically) he sure runs a good campaign. Didn't Richardson endorse him?
While I'm worried about the Exxon danger, I'm pretty impressed that he has the balls to take what is *really* killing this country on.
How many years have we sat through W saying yes to big oil and no to the people (as in above link)?
And global warming is in fact "Climate Change".
I want the most anti-Bush candidate available!

I still think that regardless of her other qualifications (or lack thereof), Hillary would make a good life insurance policy for Obama were she to be his VP.

@Ogg,
Overall, she's been so hostile (or her campaign machine) I would think Richardson or Edwards would be a better choice.
Clearly, Billary has the unique ability to mobilize Republicans in a coma against her. Not a win-win.

Ogg the Caveman said...

I'd like to see Richardson as VP.

If Billary is the vp obama's life wouldn't be worth a plug nickel. May I suggest Jon Corzine?

@buzz saw,
I'm not so sure that cutting jobs is necessarily the solution on the federal level so much as putting an end to pandering corporate lobbyists like Exxon.
Speaking of which Wagga sent me this link about a village in Alaska suing Exxon and a bunch of of other oil companies and power producers for causing coastal erosion.

Wave-powered ship

Ogg the Caveman said...

Hm. It seems like something like that would only be able to travel in the direction of the waves. Cargo ships would presumably be even slower, since they have a much higher weight to stern area ratio. It's clever, but it seems like sails would work better.

Perhaps a combination of a wave powered and wind powered ship would be best.
Poor littly doggy. While I like pythons too, if that were one of my dogs that snake would be dead.

Back to the little doggy eaten by the python - I'd like to ask WTF?
While this family clearly had the ability to take photos of the little dog's demise they are entirely clueless about dealing with snakes? I can't understand why this would be whhen they've already lost a cat and guinea pig to them.
Despite hurling chairs at the snake, it was undeterred and they were unable to save the family pet.
C'mon if the snake had already killed a couple of other family pets why don't they learn how to deal with it? Throwing chairs doesn't do shit. As opposed to rattle snakes, cobras, etc., pythons are so much easier to grab by the neck - especially when they're eating. If need be, I would kill the thing by whatever means necessary to save my dog, but first I would just grab it by the neck and throw it elsewhere.
It reminds me of those folks in the British news the other day who were complaining about their electrocuted dog, but the owner couldn't be bothered to save him due to "a tingly feeling in his hand." WTF?
Akubi was chewing on one of my AC adapters a couple years ago (which he hasn't done since) and was in serious seizure mode, but I didn't think once about disconnecting him ASAP. The overall effect was beyond tingly, but it did leave me feeling more awake than I had in some time.
