Here's a thought.
If a case achieves some defined level of notoriety, between conviction & sentencing an Internet poll should be set up to allow the populace to vote on punishment. Result to be be a primary guideline for the judge, who makes the final decision. Remember that most judges must stand for re-election.
Some kind of mechanism for plea bargains too?
