Bolinas fancies itself special. The town keeps a "free box" outside the natural foods store for anyone to donate or pick up clothes or household items. A few years ago, it passed a ballot measure officially declaring itself "a socially acknowledged, nature-loving town" that likes blueberries, bears and skunks. The town saloon has the word "peace" outside, written in seashells.

BTW this is a work in progress - more to follow!

In other news, I'm rather pissed with HP Keith's suggestion that Pelosi's degree of failure is anywhere near as bad as George W. WTF? I'm not too pleased with the crap Congress has been up to lately, but that is utter and complete BS. I can't think of a speaker of the house in my lifetime who I was terribly pleased with - nor a president for that matter - but George W. Bush's egregious failures on all counts makes Nixon look like a pretty good guy. George W has been a major, fucking, historical disaster - I can only assume was designed to errode this country to nothing. I guess Keith spends too much time vacationing in Europe to get his head out of his ass.

Although I only bought stuff on sale and was informed by the Safeway delivery guy that I had saved $56.26 in Club Card Savings (20% of my order) I was rather disturbed to note that YOY my Safeway.com charges have increased by over 20% while the value of my condo has decreased by approximately the same amount. George W. Bush and his BS has totally screwed this country!

I'm not sure why the Bolinas situation has gotten under my skin so much, but it has.

This is just my take from reading the media coverage, so it may be off-base. I've never actually been to Bolinas, I don't know anyone from there, and I don't know how slanted the media coverage is.

That said, the overall picture seems pretty laden with hypocrisy. Here we have a town that professes to be all about peace and love, but which publicly expresses those values through hatred of outsiders. And these people are shocked that the younger generation took the example that they were given one step further.

Bolinas residents are shocked. I say that the attack was inevitable. A generation is about the right time to go from tearing down road signs to trying to kill undesirables.

It's easy to love your neighbor when he's a lot like you. It's not so easy if he's got a different worldview, is socially awkward, obnoxious, or even violent. It sounds like Green is all of those things. But that's real life, and if Bolinas can't handle it, Bolinas has a problem. You don't get to pick your neighbors. Not unless you live in a McMansion in a gated community, an option that some people there should seriously consider.

My guess is that Bolinas collectively fell into the same trap as politicians, religious fundamentalists, and the more dogmatic sort of atheist: They became so convinced of their inherent goodness that they were blinded to their own humanity.

We are all broken. I'm afraid of people who think they aren't.

Speaking of big city problems:

The discovery of more than three dozen machine-sharpened spikes at the Green Lake Park boating center has prompted the city of Seattle to post warnings to would-be swimmers.

And speaking of Seattle, I just noticed your sweet find in your other post. When I was a kid we used to go past that on our way to Seattle Center.

@Ogg,
I have to confess to somewhat hating some of the Bolinas kids, because they literally said I was something along the lines of a spoiled kid spawned by yuppie parents from Stinson.
Well, if I was such a spoiled brat why did I f-ing work all the time while they kicked back and smoked pot and did jack shit?
I believe they felt the "universe" would take care of them in the end - and I never trusted anything.

For all I know, those kids who beat up the homeless guy could be one of their kids. They seemed to find it perfectly reasonable to poop out babies at 17.

@Ogg,
Does the pink elephant still exist?

Yes, or at least it did a year or so ago. IIRC, it's not far from the toe truck.

Wow, I’m currently watching this PBS program about Van Gogh and Gaugin.
They seem to suggest they had a gay relationship of sorts – I assumed it was an aesthetic friendship and Vincent was bipolar.

You're just baiting me to comment, aren't you? :-)

Hi Casey,
No, I wasn't baiting you - just reporting on the program I was watching. However, I'm sure you have plenty to share on the subject ;).
